Julia Lazarus is an artist, filmmaker, and curator based in Berlin.
In her recent video works, she takes a closer look at local political decisions that question people's relationship with nature. Using the means of the documentary camera, the framing of her films and video installations usually expands documentary paradigms, offering not only a reflection of reality but also an approach to the construction of that reality. Her films and video installations have been shown at numerous film festivals and exhibitions, including the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Design Museum London, KINDL Center for Contemporary Art Berlin, Kunstraum Kreuzberg Bethanien Berlin, Angels Barcelona, DEPO Istanbul, and NGBK Berlin, as well as Manifesta 8 in Murcia. Her films are distributed by sixpackfilm (Vienna), e-flux (New York), and Paradocs (Brussels). She is a founding member of the Radical Film Network Meeting Berlin.
Werktitel: the many levels of water
The ground beneath our feet is only seemingly stable. Water flows everywhere beneath our feet. Along the valleys left behind by the Ice Age glaciers, vast aquifers have formed. Just a few metres below the surface, the water fills every tiny gap between the overlapping layers of gravel, sand and clay. And the water never stands still, but moves slowly within the complex soil structure that has been folded over itself by enormous forces over millions of years. A drop of water can take more than a thousand years to reach the lowest point, becoming increasingly purified along the way. But who actually owns the water, and who decides what happens when it becomes scarce?
